Minutes PSB Upgrade WG Meeting 22nd of March 2012

Present: K. Hanke, B. Mikulec, V. Raginel, C. Carli, A. Newborough, J. Cole, E. Benedetto, J. Tan, A. Sarrió Martínez, J. Vollaire, R. Froeschl, M-E. Angoletta, J. Borburgh, M. Paoluzzi.

Agenda:

1. Approval of Minutes

The minutes of the meeting of the 1st March were approved.

2. Communications

3. Follow Up of Open Actions

C. Carli said that the ring collimation studies in the PSB will be done by E. Benedetto, but before these studies, a study on the losses in the PSB rings should be done.

4. TDR

K. Hanke reminded the WP Holders to start to write their chapter of the TDR. He presented the outline of the TDR.

5. Preparation of the BI review

A BI review will take place on the 27th of April. J. Tan said that the review will cover both LIU-PSB and Consolidation matters. K. Hanke presented the list of the Beam Instrumentation Specifications for LIU-PSB, with the existing specifications and the missing one. The large band Pick-ups have to be removed from this list.

6. Cooling circuit for dump

J. Vollaire reported from the meeting of the 14th of March on the Water Cooling System for the new PSB dump. Two options will be studied by RP:

  • The first option is to use the water from the existing circuit of demineralised water, but some considerations have to be taken:
    • Activation of water from the dump is diluted over a volume of ~80m3.
    • Leaks of water which will be more activated than how it is today. CV said that the leaks come mainly from the pumps, and they could be replaced during LS1, but this needs to be confirmed.
    • Activated water in non protected areas.
  • The second option is to use a closed water circuit for the dump (secondary circuit) and exchange heat with the demineralised water circuit (primary). A heat exchanger would be placed probably near the demineralised water pump to allow CV operation when beam is on, this has to be re-discussed with CV. The risk of leaks in this secondary circuit has also to be considered as the activation (Tritium) will be high.
J. Vollaire said that it should also be considered that the commissioning of the PSB 160 MeV H- Injection will induce an intensive use of the dump.

A. Sarrió Martínez added that more iterations are needed between the design office and STI before the design of the dump can be frozen. STI will organize a follow-up meeting in two weeks time with RP, CV and the LIU-PSB management, to report on the status of the design of the dump.

7. Tour de Table

  • B. Mikulec reported on the status of the evaluation of cabling needs with P. Bonnal. P. Bonnal will present the status of the work during the next LIU-PSB WG meeting.
  • J. Hansen said that he concerned by the impact of the proposed large body gate valves for H- injection on the impedance. This has to be further discussed during the next injection dedicated meeting.
  • K. Hanke said that the some WUs from the Vacuum group for the lines LBE/LBS are included in LIU-PSB. It has to be moved to Linac4 when a new baseline will be done.
  • A. Newborough said the 0.9 second cycle option was mentioned for the PS upgrade during the IEFC workshop, he asked if this option should also be studied for the upgrade of the PSB. K. Hanke will clarify that with LIU Project Team.
