This page summarises ATLAS policies which may be relevant for non-ATLAS members. The document(s) are approved by the ATLAS Collaboration Board (CB).

Policy on Data Preservation

A policy document regarding the preservation of the ATLAS data for future usage was endorsed by the ATLAS Collaboration Board in February 2015. An earlier version had been approved in October 2013.

Statement on Open Access to ATLAS Publications

ATLAS publications are Open Access, as agreed in this statement approved by the Collaboration Board in 2007.

Policy on Open Access to ATLAS Data

A policy document regarding the access to ATLAS data by non-ATLAS members was endorsed by the ATLAS Collaboration Board in June 2014.

Policy on Collaborations with non-ATLAS members (e.g. theorists)

The document on access of non-ATLAS physicists to ATLAS data and unofficial results describes the mechanisms for collaborative interactions between non-ATLAS members and ATLAS members which involve any access to unapproved (internal) ATLAS information.

Short Term Associations with ATLAS

Short Term Associations (STAs) provide the possibility for non-ATLAS members to collaborate with ATLAS authors on specific scientific or technical topics involving ATLAS data, without making the financial and service commitments made by regular ATLAS authors and their institutions. These collaborations will typically lead to one or more publications, including the STA as a co-author. Further details can also be found here.

The STA program started in 2010 and by now several publications have resulted from them.

The STA usually identifies a topic he/she would like to work on together with ATLAS members. The ATLAS members and STA candidate write a joint proposal in consultation with the conveners of the relevant physics analysis, combined performance or detector group.

The following expectations apply, motivated by the focus of the collaboration on a specific topic:

• the STA will get access to ATLAS internal documentation (notes, twiki pages, ...) of direct relevance to the proposed analysis.
• the STA is welcome to participate in those parts of an ATLAS meeting which are directly related to the analysis.
• the STA should not collaborate on the same topic with researchers from another experiment.
• the STA should not disclose information internal to ATLAS to non-ATLAS members.
• the STA should not use information from internal ATLAS meetings outside ATLAS, especially not in non-ATLAS publications.
• the STA agreement is only with the applicant and not with e.g. postdocs or students supervised by the STA. Thus only the STA will be a co-author of the ATLAS publication, unless the STA explicitly includes the students or postdocs.

In case of doubt about any of these points the ATLAS physics coordinator, relevant activity coordinator or detector project leader should be consulted.
