Week of 230213

WLCG Operations Call details

  • The connection details for remote participation are provided on this agenda page.

General Information

  • The purpose of the meeting is:
    • to report significant operational issues (i.e. issues which can or did degrade experiment or site operations) which are ongoing or were resolved after the previous meeting;
    • to announce or schedule interventions at Tier-1 sites;
    • to inform about recent or upcoming changes in the experiment activities or systems having a visible impact on sites;
    • to provide important news about the middleware;
    • to communicate any other information considered interesting for WLCG operations.
  • The meeting should run from 15:00 Geneva time until 15:20, exceptionally to 15:30.
  • The SCOD rota for the next few weeks is at ScodRota
  • Whenever a particular topic needs to be discussed at the operations meeting requiring information from sites or experiments, it is highly recommended to announce it by email to the wlcg-scod list (at cern.ch) to allow the SCOD to make sure that the relevant parties have the time to collect the required information, or invite the right people at the meeting.

Best practices for scheduled downtimes

Monday

Attendance:

  • remote: Andrew (NL-T1), Andrew (TRIUMF), Borja (Chair, Monitoring), Brian (RAL), Christoph (CMS), Darren (RAL), Dave (FNAL), Doug (BNL), Marian (Monitoring), Michal (ATLAS), Petr (ATLAS)

Experiments round table:

  • ATLAS reports ( raw view) -
    • Issues:
      • IAM performance degraded / unable to get tokens for SAM/ETF tests ( OTG0075919)
        • it takes roughly 13s to finish refresh token flow
        • oidc-agent timeout getting new fresh access tokens
      • Dark data at IN2P3-CC_SCRATCHDISK (GGUS:160367)
        • bad storage dumps, now fixed
      • "Connection timed out" deletion errors at BNL (GGUS:160392)
        • there is some data migration in dCache causing high load - migration rate decreased
      • "Unexpected server error" deletion failures at Taiwan-LCG2 (GGUS:160401)

  • ALICE
    • NTR

Sites / Services round table:

  • ASGC: NC
  • BNL: Computing outages last week caused by a too aggressive data migration rate. When the rate was reduced the problems disappeared.
  • CNAF: NTR
  • EGI: NC
  • FNAL: NTR
  • IN2P3: NC
  • JINR: NTR
  • KISTI: NC
  • KIT:
  • NDGF: NTR
  • NL-T1: NTR
  • NRC-KI: NC
  • OSG: NC
  • PIC: NC (sorry for not attending today, there is NTR from PIC)
  • RAL: The RAL Tier-1 will be having a scheduled downtime of the Antares tape service between 09:00 on Monday 27th February to 12:00 on Friday 3rd March.
     https://goc.egi.eu/portal/index.php?Page_Type=Downtime&id=33573
    This is to perform a major upgrade of the Tape Library, that will increase the capacity from 150PB to 250PB+ and allow RAL to accept LHC data without further outages of this scale for the whole of Run 3.
  • TRIUMF: In Dec 2022 & Jan 2023, notice there were some number of failed multi-core jobs in our ARCCEs that had cpu efficiencies over 100%. Further info in the Nordugrid ARCCE bug: https://bugzilla.nordugrid.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4107

  • CERN computing services:
  • CERN storage services: NC
  • CERN databases: NC
  • GGUS: NTR
  • Monitoring: monit-kibana-acc.cern.ch migration to monit-opensearch-lt.cern.ch (OTG:0075772)
  • Middleware: NTR
  • Networks: NTR
  • Security: NC
