Machine Room Planning

The Machine Room Planning unit in FIO group is responsible for overseeing

Planning, installation and safety for the Machine Room in B513
FIO Group has overall responsibility for the Machine Room in B513 and is thus involved in planning the arrangement of new installations in the roomsomething that is becoming more difficult with the large numbers of PCs being installed for physics computing.
Safety Linkmen have been appointed by certain groups to ensure that their areas of the machine room are kept safe and tidy. David Underhill is the TSO for B513 and Dick Minchin the TSA for the Machine Room and Vault areas.
Upgrading B513 infrastructure to meet LHC computing needs
Based on current plans to meet LHC offline computing requirements, we will need to make available a false floor area of some 2000m2 by 2003-4 and to support an electrical load of 2MW. In 2000,  for comparison, the machine room has a floor area of 1400m2 and the total electrical consumption is 800kW.
A major upgrade is therefore required and this is being planned in close collaboration with ST division. The key steps in this process are

conversion of the former Tape Vault in the basement of B513 to a machine room area

2

migration of computing equipment to the tape vault

3

creation of a new substation to meet the power needs of the computing and ancillary equipment

4

refurbishment of the Machine Room on the ground floor of B513.
Construction of a remote location to house tape robotics COMPLETED!
The move to Central Data Recording, together with  high capacity tapes (50GB) led to a concentration of Physics Data in the computer centre, most of it held in four STK silos. This concentration of data meant that any fire or accident in B513 could have lead to a catastrophic loss of data.
A remote location to house tape robotics equipment was proposed during 1999 as a way to avoid such a situation, and a project to add a remote building for tape robots, B613, as an extension to B186 was approved in 2000.
Work on the new building started in March 2001 and installation of the STK silos started on October 1st. A picture record of the construction work is available.
