EMI VOMS Documentation

VOMS is an Attribute Authority that issues attributes to users bot h in the form of X.509 Attribute Certificates and SAML Attribute Assertions. These attributes can then be used by other programs to authorize the users.

The service follows an established client-server architecture. It consists of a server (vomsd), an administration service (voms-admin), a client (voms-proxy-init) and some ancillary utilities (voms-proxy-info, voms-proxy-destroy, voms-proxy-list). After the service has been setup, users are supposed to replace use of grid-proxy-init with use of vomsproxy-init, generating a proxy certificate that while backward-compatible with the one generated by the globus command, contains extra informations about the user and the VOs he belongs to.
